Morgan · Since 1904
Morgan Drug has anchored Commercial Street for more than 120 years. Generations of Morgan Valley families have grown up at this counter — and we intend to keep it that way.
A Morgan institution
Morgan Drug has been the valley's pharmacy since 1904 — a run of continuous, family-stewarded care that very few pharmacies anywhere can match. The story below is the short version; the long version lives in the memories of just about everyone in Morgan County.
Whether your family has filled prescriptions here for four generations or you just moved to the valley last month, this counter is yours.
The story so far
1904 — The founding. Local families incorporated the Morgan Drug Company in October 1904, stocking the storefront with medicines, sundries, and stationery for a growing railroad town. A 1909 reorganization brought in new local stakeholders and cemented the store as a commercial anchor of Commercial Street.
1909–1961 — The Ulrich era. A young licensed pharmacist named Frank F. Ulrich moved to Morgan in 1909 and spent more than five decades behind this counter, carrying the valley through the Great Depression and two world wars. By the time of his passing in 1961, he was one of the most widely known and respected pharmacists in Utah.
1964–2001 — Merle Smith. After a brief change of hands, Merle Ray Smith — a University of Wyoming pharmacy graduate — and his wife, Mariel, bought the store in 1964 and moved to Morgan for good. For 37 years Merle ran Morgan Drug the way he lived: neighborly, generous with his time, and deeply involved in the community he served.
2001–2025 — Justin Smith. Merle's son Justin spent more than 24 years as the fixture behind the counter, doling out prescriptions and conversation in equal measure. A Morgan High state football champion and a lifelong Utes fan, Justin kept the warmth of the old-school drugstore alive until his sudden passing in June 2025. He is dearly missed — here, and across the valley.
2025 — The next chapter. Determined to keep the store independent, the Smith family entrusted Morgan Drug to Jonny and Hailey Mears of Mears Pharmacy in Farmington, connected through trusted family friends and sharing the same conviction: a pharmacy should treat its patients like neighbors, because they are. Same counter, same values, with a few modern conveniences added.
